Everything Your Property Needs, From One Crew

Most Durham Region homeowners don't need one trade — they need a plan. A patio that drains properly. A wall that holds the slope. Beds that still look sharp in August. Acorn Landscaping has been designing, building and maintaining properties across Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Bowmanville and the rest of Durham Region for more than 37 years, and we handle the whole job in-house rather than handing pieces off to subcontractors.

That means one estimate, one schedule, one crew on your property, and one person accountable for how it turns out. Browse the services below, or call us and we'll tell you honestly what your property actually needs.

Our Services

Nine core services covering design, construction and year-round care.

Landscape Design & Build

A complete plan for your property — grading, drainage, hardscape and planting — then the crew that installs it. Site-specific design for Durham Region soil and winters.

Interlocking & Hardscaping

Interlocking driveways, patios and walkways, natural stone steps and flagstone — set on a properly compacted base so they stay flat through freeze and thaw.

Retaining Walls & Armour Stone

Engineered walls and armour stone features that solve slope, erosion and drainage problems — with the crushed stone, pipe and weep holes behind them that keep them standing.

Pool Landscaping

Decking that stays cool and drains, privacy plantings, code-compliant fencing and stone features — for new pool builds or existing pools that never got finished properly.

Sod Installation

A new lawn in a single day — but only after the soil prep, topsoil and grading that decide whether it still looks good next summer.

Wooden Fencing

Cedar and pressure-treated fencing — board-on-board, shadowbox, picket and post-and-rail — set with posts deep enough for Ontario frost.

Lawn & Property Maintenance

Mowing, edging, pruning, weeding and fertilizing on a set schedule, so you stop thinking about your property and it still looks sharp after every visit.

Why Durham Region Homeowners Choose Acorn

More Than 37 Years Here

We've been building on Durham Region properties since 1989. We know which soils hold water, which slopes move, and what survives an Ontario winter — because we've gone back to look.

Family Owned and On Site

Mike Forbes and his sons work on the jobs. The person who quotes your project is the person standing on your property while it's built.

Our Own Heavy Equipment

Armour stone, grading and excavation need real machinery. We own ours, so big stone work gets placed properly instead of scaled down to what a rental can lift.

One Crew, Start to Finish

Design, excavation, stonework, fencing and planting are all in-house. No handoffs between trades, no gaps in the schedule, no finger-pointing.

Built for the Long Job

Multi-week projects are what we do best — full backyard transformations where design, hardscape and planting all have to work together.

Year-Round Relationship

Build in spring, maintain through summer, clean up in fall, plow in winter. Many of our clients have been with us for decades.

How We Work

  1. Consultation on site. We walk the property with you, listen to what you want, and point out the drainage, grade and access issues that will shape what's possible.
  2. Plan and detailed quote. You get a written scope with materials, sequence and pricing — no vague allowances that grow halfway through.
  3. Scheduled build. Our crew arrives when we said, works the project through, and keeps the site tidy at the end of each day.
  4. Walkthrough and aftercare. We go over the finished work with you and leave you with care instructions — watering, sealing, pruning — so it keeps looking the way it did on day one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a landscaping project cost?

It depends entirely on scope — a walkway is a different project than a full backyard build with a retaining wall and pool decking. We quote from an on-site visit, in writing, with materials and sequence spelled out, so you know what you're paying for before anyone starts digging.

How long does a project take?

Sod or a small walkway can be a one- or two-day job. A full landscape design and build with hardscape, stonework and planting typically runs several weeks. We give you a realistic window at quoting rather than an optimistic one.

When should I book?

Earlier than most people think. Spring and early-summer build slots fill through the winter, and fall is often the best time to start design work for the following season. Snow and ice contracts are arranged before the first snowfall.

Do you do small jobs, or only full builds?

Both. We take on single services like sod, a fence line or a seasonal cleanup, as well as multi-week property transformations. Tell us what you're thinking and we'll be straight with you about whether we're the right fit.

Do you use subcontractors?

No. Design, excavation, hardscaping, stonework, fencing and planting are all handled by our own crew, using our own equipment. One team is on your property from start to finish.

Do you handle drainage and grading problems?

Yes — and we look for them on every visit. Water is what destroys patios, walls and lawns in Durham Region. Grading, base preparation and drainage are built into how we price and construct every project, not treated as an upsell after the fact.
